The Report

Hello there!
Just a short line to thank you for a really good day's fishing.

From the moment we arrived at Stonebridge, we felt 'this was the friendly venue that we had been searching for' we were looked after really well by everyone on site. The tea and bacon sandwiches gave the day a tasty start and the opportunity for plenty of banter and social, which is an important part of our day as we are not top drawer anglers! Richard assisted us to peg and then we held the draw. None of our members had fished here before except the assistant secretary, (me) so tactics and bait were the important topics. Richard and Eric then escorted us down to St. Claude's lake, where we quickly went to our pegs after being issued with 2 Garbolino keepnets and a landing net each, what a great idea to ensure safety and health of fish stocks!

We fished from 0900 hrs to 1400 hrs. The weather was fine but breezy; the water temperature was warm and the water clear enough to see orange coloured Orfe cruising around. We fished the island end of St. Claude's and were surprised at the depth, close in, with most pegs having a good 6 feet just 2 metres out! The beauty of this lake is that the island is well out of pole range, which opens up the list of available options, Pole, waggler, tip and whip options were all used on the day.

All of our members enjoyed a great day's fishing on St. Claude's lake with weights between 7lb and 42 lb of Blue orfe, golden orfe, ide, roach, gudgeon, skimmers, common carp. The fish we caught in this lake were mainly, less than 12 oz, the carp mostly under 2 lb. Although I did manage to catch a Grass Carp of about 3lb!

The successful method on the day was to use a whip at 5 metres to hand; feeding small balls of groundbait every cast with a few loose fed maggots. This kept the fish coming all day! It is worth mentioning that staff prefer, no more than 20 lb of silverfish in one net. The venue presents anglers with a dilemma, fish for the carp but be prepared to be beaten by a net of silvers! Or vice versa.

Richard and Eric kept an unobtrusive eye on us during the match but there were no problems and all too soon the day was over. We were assisted with the weigh in by Richard and Eric, who took their time to ensure that the fish were carefully treated, weighed and returned. The sight of these fin perfect, colourful nets of silvers and blue and golden orfe was an image we don't often see up north, let's have more of it!

All of our members enjoyed an unforgettable match at a brilliant venue, we will struggle to better this day for the rest of the year, and we will be back soon!

Thanks Richard for a great day, we will try to book up soon, whilst there is still some availability.

Sunday 4th May

On Sunday 4th May Stonebridge Fishing Lakes open match saw 9 anglers. Also the Silvers weren't affected with the wintery night on the Saturday as Dave Hammel proved with a nice bag of 42lbs 2oz of Slivers caught on a short pole fishing corn over hemp. Steve Barker found success also fishing the short pole using maggot and caster landing himself a bag of 40lbs.

First Match on St Claudes Lake

Stonebridge Fishing Lakes first opening of the new 46 pegged well stocked Coarse/Match Lake.

Before the official opening for matches on Sunday 21st April a small friendly match of 5 people soon turned into 14 by word of mouth. The buzz around the lodge on Sunday morning before the start of the match was exciting to say the least (so were the bacon sandwiches!). With the fishermen in such anticipation to get to their pegs the draw was made.

On arrival at the pegs the fishermen were surprised to find not only carp and silver fish keep nets also Stonebridge's own landing nets and handles. With the kick off of the 5 hour match it wasn't long before fishermen were into fish all round the lake. With the lake never been fished before the fishermen made their approach with different methods fishing for Carp or Silver's.

After a lively 5 hour match the fish were weighed and the result were in.

Meat and pellet proved very productive for Stuart Sexton from Scorton who netted around 20 Carp. Also Anthony Murray from Darlington went with a different approach fishing for Silver fish to hand and Gary Ellwood also of Darlington found pellet and punched meat very successful netting Carp and Silvers.

After a great days fishing the results were as follows.
  1. Stuart Sexton with 66lbs 1 oz of Carp
  2. Anthony Murray with 61lbs 12oz of mainly Silvers
  3. Gary Ellwood with 53lbs 8oz of Carp and Silvers
  4. Mark Reeve with 41lb 4oz of Carp and Silvers
  5. Mark Whittaker with 37lbs 8oz of Carp and Silvers
  6. Kenny Gales with 35lbs 12oz of mainly Silvers along with a nice doubled figured Carp.
A very productive match with a turn out of fourteen, 470lbs of fish were caught throughout the match with an average of 33lbs 8oz per angler. All in all a very eventful day.

Leisure angler Chris Welsh had popped in on the Friday before the match from the hearsay he had heard that a new lake was opening. On purchasing a 6 pound leisure day ticket he had an awesome hall of 140lb of Carp along with 10lbs of Silvers. On the same day leisure angler Richard Thompson fished for three and a half hours and had an impressive bag of 86lbs mainly Silvers.
