Greys Qualifying Heat Results and Report
Added 23rd Aug 2011
Stonebridge Fishing Lakes hosted a Northern Heat of the Greys 2011 National Bank Championships on Sunday 8th August.
The specimen trout lake reached a full attendance with anglers set to compete for a place in the Greys National Bank Final later in the year.
Confidences were running high at the pre-match briefing as many had caught well during earlier practise sessions. Stonebridge supports total catch and release for its competitions so no trout were to be taken, instead a record of time for an anglers first caught trout was recorded plus 1 point for all fish returned.
The competition began at 9.30am with anglers moving 4 times before, and 4 times after lunch.
Former Stonebridge Manager and England Bank Captain Fred Bainbridge was the first angler to land a trout, at 9.31am......followed by another at 9.34am, then again at 9.37am. His first two fish fell to a blob and his third on dry fly. The rest of the competitors struggled, with a number of fish coming away from the barbless hooks . The Trout had switched off very quickly due to the angling pressure, hot sun and brisk North Westerly.
Former International angler Martin Introna was next to land a fish, at 9.44am, again on a dry fly.
The second of the morning sessions saw Barry Hutchinson landing 3 fish to a size 16 black spider whilst others struggled to get fish to the net, including Mr Introna who dropped two and suffered a number of missed takes. A change to a sparse black zonker figure of eighted sealed Martins second fish of the day. Barry Hutchinson had managed another fish and held the lead going into the lunch time break with four fish landed.
Anglers had enough time to savour a delicious hot sandwich madeby Jane, before readdressing their gear for the afternoon session - it was going to be tough !
Colin Harris made an early afternoon serge landing two fish in succession but sadly for Colin he was to drop a third and fourth ! It was fast becoming a very tight match were no angler could afford to lose even the one fish.
Dean Appleby settled in and began a late come back using one of his fathers Apps Bloodworm flies followed by Martin Introna who searched out another on the same black zonker he had used earlier.
The three qualifying places were wide open going into the final session. Fred Bainbridge had managed to regain his early lead by sticking with the dry fly.
Dean Appleby landed a very early fish, followed by another putting the pressure back on Fred......... Fred then hit two good rises to a size 18 shipmans buzzer in the film and landed two good chub, which had Martin Introna chuckling !
With only a few minutes remaining Colin Harris was broken off which proved very costly ! Dean Appleby kept his cool and landed another fine fish minutes before the end whistle.
This match was fished in great spirit as they all should be with everyone having a good banter after the match, the qualifiers were:
1st FRED BAINBRIDGE 5 fish 9.31
2nd DEAN APPLEBY 5 fish 11.44
3rd BARRY HUTCHINSON 4 fish

Price Reduction
Added 29th Mar 2011
Last year the number of doubles stocked did not show compared with the last couple of years and the supply of hard fighting doubles are getting harder to acquire. Taking the recession into account along with the number of people out of work, we have thought long and hard and after having spoken to regular anglers, we have come to the decision that we will lower our initial stocking trout to 1lb to1.5lb, keeping the middle range stock as before. This lowers the amount of doubles stocked therefore enabling us to lower the catch and release ticket price from £16 per day to £12.50. The cost to take a trout the will be £2 per pound in weight. The hourly catch and release will be £2.50 per hour with a minimum of 2 hours charged.
Tiger Trout
Added 15th Mar 2011
Stonebridge history was made by John Heward from Billing, who landed the first ever tiger trout to be stocked at Stonebridge, placing John in our Hall of Fame! The tiger trout was landed on a black fritz zonker.

Alan Hodgson from North Allerton landed the golden carp with £217 on its head! Three days after, Andrew Archbold landed it again on paste with another £27 on its head.
Letter from Alan Hodgson
Today I gave myself a rest from working and headed off to Stonebridge Fishing Lakes at Little Fencote, North Allerton. Having caught a number of quality carp on the pole (my next fish I will never forget) as my float shot off, I thought to myself, this is a good fish, I hope this is the tagged fish the owner introduced to the lake as an optional £1 extra on top of the day ticket (if caught the angler takes the pool money). To my astonishment, as the fish came to the surface, I was gobsmacked. It was the bright orange ghost carp I had been fishing for. I said to myself, do not mess this up, there is £217 on its head. As I netted the fish to my relief and £217 richer, the fish was photographed and released to spend another day with a price tag on its head. As my wife will be 60 this weekend, I will spend it on a weekend break thanks to Stonebridge Fishery.
